Not finding any real support in Scripture, Christian pacifists often resort to quoting pacifist passages from the voluminous writings of the “church fathers,” that is, influential writers and theologians who lived during the centuries after the original apostles had all died. PACIFIST TO SOLDIER-STATESMAN going to the University of Chicago. Jane Addams, whom he met at Quaker meetings at Hull-House, inspired him by her personal example.7 He adopted her outlook and accepted the moral imperative: "Begin where you are but do not be afraid to follow where truth and the pure spirit of the inner light may lead you."8.

Another approach, taken in this book, is to focus more on simply presenting a reading of the Bible that does lead to pacifism. Perhaps the pacifist might think this is clearly the one best reading of the Bible, but the simple fact that most Christians do not share that conclusion is enough to impose a large does of humility on the pacifist.   The Manly Christian Pacifist Meet the gun-loving, red meat–eating evangelical whose reading of Scripture persuaded him to embrace nonviolence. Review by David Gushee October 1,

Here are two key differences between nonviolence as taught by the Buddha, and pacifism. First, the Buddha did not teach social and political philosophy; and second, he taught a path of life, not a blanket ideology. Guiding each interested individual to walk the path, the Buddha encouraged a pure mind that seeks the least harm. Boston College theologian Lisa Sowle Cahill has also weighed in on the issue with her book, Love Your Enemies: Discipleship, Pacifism, and Just War Theory. Unlike Helgeland, Cahill is quite willing to argue that the writings of the early Fathers demonstrate that they were indeed “pacifists” and she unambiguously refers to them as such on several occasions. Radical Pacifism in Modern America traces cycles of success. The first is the position of pure pacifism, which states that no Christian may ever take up arms.

The second is the position summed up in the phrase, “My country, right or wrong.” This position says that the Christian citizen has a duty to fight in whatever kind of war the government decides to prosecute.

Pacifism is surrender. "The pacifist viewpoint is appealing in principle, but in practice it means surrendering to the aggressor," is a charge heard often. "Capitulation to the forces of evil cannot be moral." The problem with this objection is that it equates pacifism with passive nonresistance.

Here is a collection of various things I have written over the years where I reflect on the challenges to pacifism that the Old Testament offers.

Pacifist propaganda usually boils down to saying that one side is as bad as the other, but if one looks closely at the writing of the younger intellectual pacifists, one finds that they do not by any means express impartial disapproval but are directed almost entirely against Britain and the United States ”.

The ultimate conclusion of all of this is the commonality of the human species. A case is made for the irrelevance of race; this seems to be a prominent theme throughout the s: Arguments for Pacifism The cost of war is too great. The appalling loss of life, the significant economic costs, the destruction of physical and social infrastructure, the depletion of natural resources, and the provision to re-build makes the cost of war too high.

Just War Theory Isn’t Obsolete Ap Septem By Gregory Brown Modern warfare may have vastly increased the scale, but the traditional criteria for just war remain sound, especially in helping leaders avoid the false extremes of cynical realism and idealistic pacifism.

Muggletonians avoided all forms of worship or preaching, and met only for discussion and socializing. The movement was egalitarian, apolitical and pacifist, and resolutely avoided evangelism. Members attained a degree of public notoriety by cursing those who reviled their faith.

Pacifism Is Immoral and Here’s Why by Kevin Wilson. From an early age, we teach our children that violence never solved anything. We teach them that the correct way to defend oneself from a bully is to appeal to authority, that the designated grownup will save them.

Pacifism isn't quite as old as war, but its roots go back to ancient times. Perhaps the first major pacifist figure was Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism, who broke with the tradition of his warrior caste in India sometime between and B.C.E.

and taught his followers that it was wrong to inflict suffering on any living thing [source: Walters and Jarrell]. The Bonhoeffer of clearly writes and speaks like a pacifist. The Bonhoeffer of does not act like one. A pacifist is a coward who wants the luxury of denouncing as murderers those upon whom his free speech depends. I don’t find this picture of pacifism remotely fair, though I understand the logic that produces it. But I’d recommend that anyone tempted to hiss at pacifism pick up a single book, Vera Brittain’s memoir Testament of Youth.
